  1. Nanjiyamma belongs to the Irula community in Nakkupathi, a tribal village nestled in Attappadi, Kerala.
  2. She is an integral part of the Azad Kala Samithi, led by Pazhani Swami, another talented tribal artist from Attappadi.
  3. In 2020, she made her debut as a playback singer through the film “Ayyappanum Koshiyum”. Interestingly, she also portrayed the role of the protagonist’s mother-in-law, adding depth to the movie.
  4. Beyond her musical pursuits, Nanjiyamma sustains herself by farming and caring for cattle.
  5. Her repertoire primarily consists of folk songs that have been passed down through generations.
  6. Notably, she composed the film’s title song “Kalakkatha” in her native Irula language, which was set to music by Jakes Bejoy. The song became a sensation on YouTube, amassing over 10 million views within a month.
  7. Nanjiyamma’s exceptional talent earned her the prestigious National Film Award for Best Female Playback Singer in the 68th National Film Awards of India for the song “Kalakkatha” from "Ayyappanum Koshiyum".
  8. Additionally, she received the Special Jury Award at the Kerala State Film Awards in 2020.
