Nanjiyamma
Biography
Nanjiyamma, born on January 1, 1958, is a renowned folk singer hailing from a tribal community in Kerala, India. She gained widespread recognition after lending her voice as a playback singer in the Malayalam film Ayyappanum Koshiyum (2020). The film’s title song, “Kalakkatha,” which she wrote in the Irula language and composed by Jakes Bejoy, became immensely popular on YouTube, amassing over 10 million views within a month.
Nanjiyamma’s journey began in the Azad Kala Samithi, led by tribal artist Pazhani Swami in Attappadi. In addition to her musical pursuits, she also played the role of a mother-in-law to the film’s protagonist, Biju Menon. Her livelihood revolves around farming and tending to cattle. Nanjiyamma predominantly sings traditional folk songs that have been passed down through generations. Notably, she was awarded the National Film Award for Best Female Playback Singer for her soulful rendition of “Kalakkatha” in Ayyappanum Koshiyum.
In a remarkable feat, Nanjiyamma’s voice was also featured in the promotional song for the Kerala government’s housing program, Life Mission, marking the first time the Irula language was used for a public relations initiative in the state1. Her contributions to music and culture continue to resonate, making her an inspiring figure in the world of Indian folk music.
