Amar Singh Chamkila, born as Dhanni Ram on July 21, 1960, was an influential Indian singer and musician in the realm of Punjabi music. His vibrant language, high-pitched vocals, and innovative compositions, often accompanied by the masterful Tumbi, catapulted him to fame. Chamkila’s music was deeply rooted in the rustic life of Punjab, where he grew up. His best-known hits include “Pehle Lalkare Naal” and devotional songs like “Baba Tera Nankana,” “Tar Gayi Ravidas Di Pathri,” and “Talwar Main Kalgidhar Di.” Although he never recorded it himself, he penned the widely popular “Jatt Di Dushmani,” which has been sung by various Punjabi artists. Tragically, Amar Singh Chamkila’s life was cut short when he and his second wife, Amarjot, were assassinated along with two band members on March 8, 1988.
