The central government has introduced a new initiative aimed at expanding Piped Natural Gas (PNG) connections for households across India. The move could change the way many families access cooking gas, as PNG is supplied directly to homes through pipelines, eliminating the need to book, store and replace LPG cylinders.
However, the new scheme does not mean that existing LPG users can stop booking their cylinders. The no-booking benefit applies to households that switch to or use PNG, not to conventional LPG cylinder connections.
New Government Scheme for PNG Connections
The Incentive Scheme for Promotion of Domestic PNG Connections was approved by the Union government in August 2026 and became effective from September 1. The scheme is designed to encourage City Gas Distribution companies to activate existing PNG connections and expand pipeline networks to more households.
The government said India already has around 1.74 crore domestic PNG connections. Under the new initiative, gas distribution companies will receive incentives for adding eligible domestic connections beyond specified targets.
No Cylinder Booking With PNG
One of the biggest advantages for households switching to PNG is that there is no requirement to book a cylinder. Unlike LPG, PNG reaches the kitchen through an underground pipeline and is supplied continuously.
Consumers are billed according to their actual metered gas consumption, similar to electricity or piped water. This removes the need to wait for LPG delivery or keep spare cylinders at home.
What About Existing LPG Users?
Existing Indane, Bharat Gas and HP Gas customers using LPG cylinders still need to follow the applicable refill-booking process.
Current government guidance requires consumers to book LPG refills through authorised digital or telephone channels. The government has also introduced booking intervals to manage supply and discourage panic booking.
Therefore, claims that all LPG consumers will no longer need to book cylinders are misleading.
PNG Could Offer More Convenience
The government says PNG provides several advantages, including continuous supply, reduced dependence on cylinder delivery and easier fuel management. It can also be particularly convenient for households in apartments and densely populated urban areas.
PNG is supplied at low pressure through underground pipelines, and the government describes it as a cleaner cooking-fuel option compared with conventional LPG and traditional fuels.
LPG Booking Rules Still Apply
For consumers who continue using LPG, booking remains necessary. Official LPG services provide booking through IVRS, missed calls, WhatsApp, mobile applications and online portals.
The key difference is simple: LPG requires cylinder booking and delivery, while PNG provides piped gas directly to the home.
What Consumers Should Know
The new government initiative is primarily about expanding India’s PNG infrastructure. It does not automatically cancel LPG connections or introduce automatic LPG cylinder deliveries for every household.
Consumers considering switching should first check whether PNG is available in their area and understand the connection, installation and billing process offered by their local City Gas Distribution company.
