Durga Puja is one of the major Hindu festivals honouring Goddess Durga. In 2026, the cited Drik Panchang calendar lists the main Durga Puja period from October 16 to October 21. Ritual names, observances and local schedules may vary by region and panchang.
Durga Puja 2026 dates
The calendar lists the following sequence:
- October 16: Shashthi and the beginning of the listed Durga Puja period.
- October 17: Saptami.
- October 18: Ashtami.
- October 19: Navami.
- October 20: Vijayadashami/Dashami observances in the calendar sequence.
Because regional calendars and festival customs can differ, readers should confirm the exact observance schedule for their city or community.
Major rituals and traditions
Durga Puja festivities often include bodhan and invocation, Pushpanjali, devotional offerings, dhunuchi dance, cultural performances and visits to decorated pandals. Ashtami and Navami are particularly important for many devotees. On Vijayadashami, communities mark the conclusion of the festival with rituals that vary by region.
How people celebrate
In West Bengal and Bengali communities worldwide, Durga Puja is also a major cultural gathering, with elaborate pandals, art installations, music, food and community events. Other regions observe the period through Navratri worship and local traditions.
Check local timings
Puja timings depend on the city and the local panchang. Before planning travel, fasting or a specific ritual, consult a location-specific calendar and local organisers.
