The Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) wage ceiling for mandatory coverage has been increased from ₹15,000 to ₹25,000 per month, effective September 17, 2026, according to the Ministry of Labour and Employment. The change is expected to bring more than 51 lakh additional employees within mandatory EPFO coverage, subject to the applicable rules.

    What has changed?

The previous ₹15,000 monthly wage ceiling had been in place since September 2014. Under the revised ceiling, eligible employees earning between ₹15,000 and ₹25,000 may now fall within mandatory EPF coverage if they meet the other statutory conditions. The change also affects the wage base used for applicable EPF, EPS and EDLI contributions.

    Will PF deductions increase?

The actual contribution depends on an employee’s eligible wages, membership status and the applicable scheme rules. Employees should not assume that every person earning below ₹25,000 will automatically see the same deduction. Employers should review payroll settings and confirm the correct treatment with their EPFO office or payroll adviser.

    What should employees do?

    • Check whether your employer has reviewed your EPF eligibility after the change.
    • Verify your UAN, Aadhaar and bank KYC details on the official EPFO member portal.
    • Review your salary slip and passbook after the employer files the relevant ECR.
    • Ask HR to explain any change in deductions or employer contributions.

    What employers should check

Employers should review eligible employee records, payroll configuration, UAN/KYC details and monthly Electronic Challan-cum-Return (ECR) filings. The Ministry has said the revision is intended to extend social-security coverage to a wider group of workers.
