The American Civil War lasted from April 12, 1861 to April 9, 1865. The war was fought between the United States and 11 Southern states that seceded to form the Confederate States of America. The war was caused by disputes over slavery and states' rights.

The war began to die down on April 9, 1865, when Confederate Gen. Robert E Lee surrendered to Union Gen.. President Andrew Johnson declared a formal end to the war on August 20, 1866. 

The war saw 10,000 battles and engagements across the continent. Native Americans fought on both sides of the war, with many members of tribes fighting for the Confederacy.
