S. Janaki
Biography
S. Janaki is an Indian playback singer and composer from Andhra Pradesh. She is known as the Nightingale of South India and is credited in more than 60 movies, including Gunaa, Velaiyilla Pattathari, and Thalapathi. She has won 12 Nandi awards, including 10 for films and 2 for television serial songs. Her awards include the Padma Bhushan for Thevar Magan in 2013 and the National Film Award for Best Female Playback Singer for Sitaara in 1993.
Janaki was born on April 23, 1938 in Palapatla, Andhra Pradesh. She began her career in Telugu films in 1957 in Movie MLA and continued to have hits throughout the 1960s and 70s, sometimes continuing until the mid 90s. Some of her songs include Kanmani Anbodu Kadhalan and Amma Amma.
Janaki has declined the Padma Bhushan in 2013 because she felt it was being bestowed on her long after it was due. She also bowed out from recording and performing towards the end of the 2010s, but her countless run of songs continue to be streamed in the millions every month by listeners around the world.
