Biography

Pullela Gopichand, a distinguished figure in Indian badminton, was born on November 16, 1973, in Nagandla, Prakasam district, Andhra Pradesh, India.

Gopichand's badminton journey began in his early years, eventually propelling him to become one of India's most celebrated players. His crowning achievement came in 2001 when he clinched the prestigious All England Open Badminton Championships title, following in the footsteps of Prakash Padukone to become only the second Indian to do so.

Injuries cut short Gopichand's playing career, but he seamlessly transitioned into coaching. He established the Gopichand Badminton Academy in Hyderabad, which has been instrumental in nurturing and developing top-tier Indian badminton talents like PV Sindhu and Saina Nehwal.

Throughout his career, Gopichand has amassed numerous accolades, including a gold medal at the 1998 Commonwealth Games and a silver medal at the 1998 Asian Games. His contributions to Indian badminton have been recognized with awards such as the Arjuna Award in 1999, the Dronacharya Award in 2009, and the Padma Bhushan in 2014.

On the personal front, Gopichand is married to PVV Lakshmi, who is also a former badminton player. Together, they form a formidable force in the realm of Indian badminton, both on and off the court.
