Biography

Daniel Balaji, born as T. C. Balaji on December 2, 1975, was an Indian actor known for his impactful performances in Tamil and Malayalam cinema. He predominantly worked in the Tamil film industry and left an indelible mark on the cultural landscape.

Balaji hailed from Chennai, born to a Telugu father and a Tamil mother. He studied film direction at the Taramani film institute in Chennai. His uncle, Kannada film director Siddalingaiah, was the father of Tamil actor Murali. Balaji’s nephew, Atharvaa, made his acting debut in the film “Baana Kaathadi”.

Balaji’s journey in the entertainment industry began as a unit production manager on the sets of Kamal Haasan’s unreleased film “Marudhanayagam”. His first notable role was in the television serial “Chithi”, where he portrayed a character named Daniel. Following the success of the show, he continued to shine in the serial “Alaigal”. Director Sunder K. Vijayan named him Daniel Balaji, recognizing his portrayal of the character in “Chithi”.

In Tamil cinema, Balaji made his debut in the film “April Maadhathil” and later appeared in “Kaadhal Kondein”. However, it was his role as a police officer in “Kaakha Kaakha” alongside Suriya that catapulted him to fame. The film, directed by Gautham Vasudev Menon, revolved around a squad of policemen combating organized crime in Chennai. Balaji’s powerful performance earned acclaim.

He continued to impress audiences with his portrayal of the antagonist Amudhan in the blockbuster film “Vettaiyaadu Vilaiyaadu”, starring Kamal Haasan. The movie, a police procedural centered on a series of murders, showcased Balaji’s versatility. His subsequent film, “Polladhavan”, also contributed to his success.

Balaji extended his talent to the Telugu film industry, playing a villain in “Chirutha” and later taking on the hero’s role in “Muthirai”. He made his Malayalam cinema debut with “Black” and went on to portray antagonists in films like “Bhagavan” (opposite Mohanlal) and “Daddy Cool” (opposite Mammootty).

Tragically, Daniel Balaji passed away due to a heart attack on March 29, 2024, at the age of 48.
