rmu emphasised that film artists have considerable influence because their words and actions are closely followed by audiences. She encouraged popular artists to use that influence responsibly and avoid promoting products that may pose health concerns.

Her comments came amid continuing scrutiny of celebrity advertising for pan masala and related products. In August, the Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration issued notices to actors Shah Rukh Khan, Ajay Devgn and Tiger Shroff regarding their association with an advertisement for a pan masala-linked brand. Maharashtra FDA Commissioner Tukaram Mundhe said the rules could apply to manufacturers, sellers and celebrity endorsers.

Why Did X Users Ask ‘Why Not Ban?’

After the President’s remarks were shared on the official President of India account on X, the discussion expanded beyond celebrity endorsements.

Some users questioned why products considered harmful should continue to be legally manufactured and sold if there are serious concerns about their health effects. One recurring argument was that regulation should address the manufacturing and sale of such products, rather than placing responsibility primarily on actors who advertise them.

Other users, however, supported Murmu’s appeal and argued that celebrities should consider their influence before accepting endorsement deals, particularly when young audiences may be exposed to such advertising.

The online discussion therefore focused on two separate issues: the responsibility of celebrities as advertisers and the government’s role in regulating products and their marketing.

    Celebrity Influence and Advertising

Celebrity endorsements are a significant part of India’s advertising industry. A familiar actor can give a product substantial visibility and connect it with an aspirational lifestyle. That influence has also raised questions about whether celebrities should exercise additional caution when promoting products associated with health risks.

Public-health experts have separately called for stronger restrictions on advertising certain unhealthy food and beverage products, particularly marketing aimed at children.

President Murmu’s remarks have consequently reopened a broader conversation about advertising standards, celebrity accountability and public-health regulation. While her statement was directed at film personalities, the reactions on X show that many people are also asking how responsibility should be divided among advertisers, manufacturers, celebrities and regulators.
