The 81st United Nations General Assembly (UNGA 2026) enters a crucial phase on September 22, with world leaders gathering in New York for the high-level General Debate. US President Donald Trump is scheduled to address the UN General Assembly, while India is represented by External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, whose address is scheduled for September 26.
The high-level week runs from September 22 to 29, with the General Debate taking place from September 22 to 26 and again on September 28. The 81st session officially opened on September 8 under General Assembly President Khalilur Rahman of Bangladesh.
Trump’s UNGA Address in Focus
Trump’s appearance is expected to attract significant international attention amid ongoing conflicts and diplomatic tensions. Reuters reported that the US president’s schedule in New York includes a series of meetings with leaders from different regions, alongside his UN address. The war involving the United States, Israel and Iran is among the major geopolitical issues surrounding this year’s gathering.
Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian is also expected to attend the General Assembly, providing Tehran with a platform to present its position before the international community. The United States has granted visas to Pezeshkian and Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, while imposing restrictions on aspects of the Iranian delegation’s movement and activities in the country.
The presence of both US and Iranian leadership at the same international forum comes against the backdrop of continuing tensions and conflict. Diplomatic engagement between Washington and Tehran is therefore expected to remain an important focus during the UNGA week.
S. Jaishankar to Represent India
India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar is scheduled to deliver India’s national statement on September 26. His participation comes at a time when global conflicts, energy security, economic uncertainty and questions surrounding multilateral institutions remain prominent issues.
Jaishankar has already participated in high-level diplomatic engagements on the sidelines of the UNGA. His discussions are expected to cover India’s positions on major international developments and issues affecting developing economies.
Key Issues at UNGA 2026
Beyond the conflicts dominating headlines, the UN agenda includes climate action, sustainable development, sea-level rise, pandemic preparedness and nuclear disarmament. A high-level meeting on sea-level rise is scheduled for September 24, while discussions on pandemic preparedness are planned for September 25.
The 81st General Assembly is being held under the theme “Restoring Trust, Managing Transformation: A United Nations That Delivers for All.”
