Customers across India may face disruptions in branch-based banking services as bank unions have proposed a three-day nationwide strike from September 28 to September 30, 2026. The State Bank of India (SBI) has advised customers to complete important banking work in advance and use alternative channels during the strike period.
The proposed strike by the United Forum of Bank Unions (UFBU) comes after earlier industrial action and is linked to employee-related demands, including the long-standing demand for a five-day banking week. SBI has said that it is making arrangements to maintain essential services, but branch and office operations could still be affected.
Why Customers Should Plan Ahead
The timing could create an extended interruption for customers who depend on physical branches. September 26 is the second Saturday of the month and September 27 is Sunday. If the proposed strike proceeds as scheduled, some customers could therefore experience limited branch access for five consecutive days.
SBI has advised customers to complete transactions and other important branch-related work before the strike begins. This is particularly relevant for services that require physical interaction with bank staff.
Which Banking Services Will Be Available?
While branch operations may be affected, SBI has encouraged customers to use its digital and self-service channels. These include Internet Banking, YONO, mobile banking and UPI for transactions that can be completed digitally.
Customers can also use SBI ATMs and Automated Deposit and Withdrawal Machines (ADWMs) for cash withdrawals and other supported services. SBI’s ATM network provides both cash withdrawal and deposit facilities at eligible machines.
SBI’s Customer Service Points (CSPs) may also provide certain banking services during the disruption. Customers should check whether the particular service they require is available through their nearest CSP.
