The Uttar Pradesh government is planning to provide interest-free credit of up to ₹1 lakh to around 1 crore women across the state, in a major initiative aimed at promoting women’s financial independence, entrepreneurship and livelihood opportunities.
Under the proposed credit programme, eligible women will receive financial assistance in three stages. The first tranche will provide ₹20,000, allowing beneficiaries to start or expand small businesses and income-generating activities.
Women who repay the first tranche on time will become eligible for the second tranche of ₹30,000. Those who successfully repay the second round will then be eligible for the third and final tranche of ₹50,000. Together, the three tranches can provide total interest-free credit of ₹1 lakh per beneficiary.
The initiative is expected to benefit women involved in small businesses, self-employment and various livelihood activities. The government’s focus is likely to be on helping women create sustainable sources of income rather than relying solely on financial assistance.
The repayment-linked structure is also designed to encourage financial discipline among beneficiaries. By making timely repayment a condition for accessing subsequent tranches, the programme could help women build creditworthiness and develop better financial management practices.
With a target of 1 crore women, the proposed initiative could become one of the state’s largest women-focused financial support programmes. If implemented effectively, it could provide significant support to women in both urban and rural areas.
The ₹20,000 initial tranche could be particularly useful for small-scale activities such as home-based businesses, tailoring, food processing, handicrafts, retail activities and other micro-enterprises. As beneficiaries demonstrate their ability to repay, the larger subsequent tranches could help them expand their businesses and increase their earnings.
The programme also fits into the broader push towards women-led development and entrepreneurship. Providing access to affordable capital can help overcome one of the biggest challenges faced by aspiring women entrepreneurs—limited access to formal credit.
The proposed scheme could have a wider economic impact as well. If a large number of women use the funds to establish or expand businesses, it could generate employment, strengthen local economies and increase household incomes.
However, details regarding eligibility criteria, application procedures, implementation timelines, participating financial institutions and monitoring mechanisms are yet to be fully clarified. The government is expected to announce further details before the programme is formally rolled out.
If implemented as planned, the initiative could give 1 crore women in Uttar Pradesh access to up to ₹1 lakh in interest-free credit, while rewarding timely repayment with access to progressively larger amounts
