Updated: October 18, 2026. A serious road accident near Sheetla Mata Temple in Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh, has left multiple people dead and many others injured. Early reports from police and news agencies put the death toll at 12, while some later reports have cited 13. The figures may change as officials verify information, so readers should follow confirmed updates from local authorities.
According to initial reports, a paddy-laden truck lost control at around 1:30 a.m. while approaching the temple area during Navratri. The vehicle reportedly crossed police barricades and struck devotees gathered on the road before colliding with the temple’s outer gate and wall. Emergency teams transported injured people to nearby hospitals.
What authorities have said
Police said dozens of people were taken for medical treatment, including several with serious injuries. Two personnel who were on duty in the area were also reported injured. Authorities are investigating how the truck entered a road where heavy vehicles were reportedly restricted and whether a mechanical problem contributed to the crash.
Investigation and safety questions
The incident raises urgent questions about vehicle access, barricade placement and crowd management near religious sites during major festivals. Investigators are expected to examine the truck, review the checkpoint arrangements and collect eyewitness accounts. The cause should not be treated as established until the investigation confirms it.
