Diwali Festival 2024: How Many Days Diwali is Celebrated and Key Dates

Diwali, also known as the Festival of Lights, is one of the most celebrated festivals in India. This vibrant festival spans over five days, each with its own significance and rituals. Diwali symbolizes the victory of light over darkness and good over evil, and it brings together people of all ages in joyous celebrations.

Day 1: Dhanteras
The festivities begin with Dhanteras, the day dedicated to wealth and prosperity. People purchase precious metals like gold and silver, as well as new utensils, believing it brings good luck. Homes and businesses are cleaned and decorated to welcome the goddess Lakshmi.

Day 2: Naraka Chaturdashi (Choti Diwali)
The second day, known as Naraka Chaturdashi or Choti Diwali, commemorates the victory of Lord Krishna over the demon Narakasura. This day is marked by early morning rituals, including a special oil bath, and small-scale fireworks.

Day 3: Lakshmi Puja (Diwali)
Lakshmi Puja is the main day of Diwali, when devotees worship the goddess Lakshmi for wealth and prosperity. Homes are illuminated with oil lamps and decorative lights, and families come together to perform prayers and share festive meals. This night is filled with fireworks and the exchange of gifts.

Day 4: Govardhan Puja
The fourth day, Govardhan Puja, celebrates Lord Krishna's lifting of the Govardhan hill to protect his people from rain and floods. Various rituals and offerings are made to honor Krishna and to seek his blessings.

Day 5: Bhai Dooj
The festival concludes with Bhai Dooj, a day dedicated to the bond between brothers and sisters. Sisters perform a ritual for their brothers' long life and well-being, while brothers give gifts in return. This day strengthens family ties and mutual affection.

Diwali is a time of joy, unity, and spiritual renewal. The five-day celebration captures the essence of Indian culture and traditions, bringing light and happiness to millions of people around the world.
