Meta has started rolling out parental supervision tools for Threads in India, giving parents and guardians greater visibility and control over how their teenagers use the social media platform. The rollout is part of Meta’s wider effort to strengthen safety features for young users across its apps amid growing concerns about children’s online experiences.
The new Threads parental supervision feature is being introduced across the Asia-Pacific region, including India. Meta said parents can access the controls through Family Center, its central hub for managing supervision across supported Meta platforms. The company had initially announced the Threads supervision tools in July and began the global rollout in September.
What Can Parents Control on Threads?
Once parental supervision is activated, parents can view how much time their teenager has spent on Threads each day during the previous week. They can also see the teenager’s average daily usage and establish daily time limits.
The controls also include Sleep Mode, allowing parents to restrict or block access to Threads during selected nighttime hours. Meta says notifications are muted and automatic replies are enabled by default between 10 PM and 7 AM when the relevant sleep settings are active.
Parents can additionally manage who can tag their teenager in posts, as well as oversee certain privacy and sensitive-content settings. This provides families with more options to shape the way teenagers interact with the platform without giving parents access to every aspect of their child’s account.
Additional Protections for Teen Accounts
Threads already provides built-in protections through its Teen Accounts system. These include private account settings and restrictions on the type of content teenagers can see.
For teenagers under 16, parents can decide whether certain protective settings can be changed to become less restrictive. This gives parents an additional layer of control over safety settings that are otherwise designed to remain more restrictive for younger users.
The introduction of these tools comes as technology companies face increasing scrutiny over online safety and children’s exposure to potentially harmful content. Meta has separately outlined efforts to combat child exploitation across its platforms and said it has removed large numbers of violating accounts and content in India.
How to Set Up Threads Parental Supervision
Parents and guardians can use Meta Family Center to establish supervision for a teenager’s Threads account. Once the supervision connection is established, available controls and usage information can be accessed through the Family Center.
The rollout makes Threads part of Meta’s broader parental supervision ecosystem, which already covers several of the company’s other platforms. Meta says it plans to continue expanding supervision tools to provide families with additional visibility and controls.
For parents in India, the update provides new ways to manage teenagers’ screen time, nighttime access, tagging, privacy and content preferences while they use Threads.
