L&T Semiconductor and Tata Electronics Partner to Expand Indigenous Chip Production in India

    L&T Semiconductor Technologies Limited (LTSCT) and Tata Electronics have announced a strategic partnership to expand indigenous semiconductor manufacturing in India and develop chip products for global customers. The collaboration combines LTSCT’s semiconductor design expertise with Tata Electronics’ capabilities in semiconductor fabrication, packaging and testing.

    Announced on September 18, 2026, the partnership is aimed at building domestic design and manufacturing capabilities for next-generation semiconductor products across sectors including automotive, industrial, communications, security and intelligent-edge applications.

    Focus on India-Designed Chips

    LTSCT is a fabless semiconductor company and a wholly owned subsidiary of Larsen & Toubro. Its portfolio covers areas including power semiconductors, compute, analog and mixed-signal products, IoT modules and RF technologies.

    Under the new partnership, the two companies will explore manufacturing and packaging opportunities for LTSCT’s existing and future chip products using Tata Electronics’ range of fabrication technologies and packaging solutions. They will also work on optimising chip designs for manufacturing to improve efficiency and enable production at scale.

    The companies said the collaboration is intended to help take semiconductor products designed in India into global markets with improved supply-chain resilience, reliability and time-to-market.

    Tata Electronics Expands Semiconductor Footprint

    The partnership adds to Tata Electronics’ growing semiconductor activities in India. The company is developing semiconductor manufacturing and packaging capabilities across multiple locations, including its planned fabrication facility in Dholera, Gujarat, and semiconductor packaging operations in Jagiroad, Assam.

    Tata Electronics has also been building partnerships with international and Indian technology companies to strengthen different stages of the semiconductor supply chain. Its recent agreements include collaborations covering wafer fabrication, assembly and testing, advanced packaging and technology development.

    Targeting Global Markets

    The L&T Semiconductor-Tata Electronics partnership is significant because it brings together two different parts of the semiconductor value chain: chip design and chip manufacturing.

    LTSCT CEO Sandeep Kumar said the collaboration would help industrialise semiconductor designs through advanced packaging and manufacturing. Tata Electronics CEO and Managing Director Randhir Thakur said the partnership combines LTSCT’s design and engineering expertise with Tata Electronics’ manufacturing, packaging and testing capabilities.

    The companies intend to use the collaboration to develop manufacturing capabilities that can serve both Indian and international customers.

    India’s Semiconductor Push

    The agreement comes as India continues to expand its semiconductor ecosystem through the government’s semiconductor mission and Semicon 2.0 programme. The broader strategy aims to increase domestic value addition and develop capabilities spanning chip design, fabrication, packaging, testing and related supply chains.

    With L&T Semiconductor bringing indigenous chip designs and Tata Electronics expanding manufacturing infrastructure, the latest partnership represents another step in India’s effort to build a more integrated semiconductor ecosystem and supply products to markets around the world.
