The Government of India has announced a new requirement for domestic LPG consumers receiving cylinders at the regulated price with applicable subsidy. From October 1, 2026, consumers will need to complete Biometric Aadhaar Authentication (BAA) to book subsidised domestic LPG refills.
The move is aimed at strengthening beneficiary verification, preventing duplicate or ineligible LPG connections and ensuring that subsidised cooking gas reaches genuine consumers.
Nearly 90% of LPG Consumers Already Authenticated
According to the government, 27.43 crore active domestic LPG consumers, representing around 89.9% of the total, have already completed Biometric Aadhaar Authentication.
Consumers who have already completed the process do not need to take any additional action. Their LPG refill bookings are expected to continue under the applicable regulated-price and subsidy arrangements.
The requirement is particularly relevant for consumers who have not yet completed biometric authentication.
How to Complete LPG Aadhaar Biometric Authentication
Consumers who still need to complete the process can use multiple channels. Biometric authentication can be completed during an LPG cylinder delivery, at the consumer’s LPG distributor, or through the mobile applications provided by oil marketing companies.
Earlier government guidance has specifically listed mobile applications operated by IndianOil, Bharatgas and HP Gas as channels through which consumers can complete authentication.
Consumers can also contact the LPG consumer helpline 1800-2333-555 for assistance with authentication and subsidy-related queries.
What Happens If Aadhaar Authentication Is Not Completed?
From October 1, consumers who have not completed the required biometric authentication may not be able to book domestic LPG refills at the regulated price with applicable subsidy.
The government has been using Aadhaar-based authentication and database verification as part of wider efforts to remove duplicate and ineligible LPG connections and improve targeted subsidy delivery.
The government has also previously stated that biometric authentication can be completed through delivery personnel, distributor showrooms and official oil-company applications.
Why the Government Is Introducing the Requirement
The LPG authentication drive is intended to improve the accuracy of beneficiary identification and reduce the possibility of subsidised cylinders being diverted or allocated to ineligible connections.
The government has previously said that Aadhaar-based verification and de-duplication have helped identify and remove duplicate, inactive and ineligible LPG connections under the PAHAL system.
Consumers who have already completed biometric Aadhaar authentication generally do not need to repeat the process. Those who have not completed it should verify their status through their LPG distributor or official oil-company channels before the October 1 deadline.
