Historic Event: 130 Dalit Families Enter Gidheshwar Shiv Temple After 300 Years

In a monumental step towards social equality, 130 Dalit families from Gidhgram village in West Bengal’s Purba Bardhaman district entered the Gidheshwar Shiv Temple for the first time in nearly 300 years. This historic event, which took place under the watchful eyes of local authorities, marks a significant victory in the fight against caste-based discrimination.

The temple, located in the Katwa subdivision, had long been inaccessible to Dalit families, who were barred from entering due to entrenched caste prejudices. Despite repeated attempts to gain entry, these families faced resistance, including economic boycotts and social ostracization. However, their determination, coupled with intervention from the district administration and police, finally led to a resolution.

On the morning of March 12, 2025, five representatives from the Dalit community, escorted by police and civic volunteers, climbed the temple steps and performed rituals, including pouring milk and water on the Shivling. This act symbolized the breaking of centuries-old barriers and the assertion of their fundamental right to worship.

The event was preceded by weeks of negotiations involving local officials, temple authorities, and community leaders. Sub-Divisional Officer Ahimsa Jain played a pivotal role in mediating discussions and ensuring a peaceful resolution. While the families expressed joy and relief, they remain cautiously optimistic about the long-term impact of this breakthrough.

This historic moment not only highlights the resilience of the Dalit community but also underscores the importance of administrative support in dismantling discriminatory practices. It serves as a reminder that the fight for equality is far from over, but progress is indeed possible.
