Bengaluru, October 23, 2026: Healthcare price transparency is back in focus in Karnataka, where private hospitals have been directed to prominently display rates for key medical procedures at reception counters, according to a report published Friday.
Procedure costs to be displayed
The reported direction is intended to help patients understand likely charges before choosing a hospital or undergoing a procedure. Displaying rates can make comparisons easier, although the final bill may still depend on the patient’s condition, room category, investigations, medicines and complications.
What about medicine purchase prices?
Earlier in October, Karnataka’s Food Safety and Drugs Administration issued a circular directing hospitals and medicine sellers to disclose the procurement or landing price, maximum retail price (MRP) and amount charged to patients on bills. However, a subsequent report on October 13 said the department was preparing to withdraw that order following concerns about the regulatory position. The current status of that separate medicine-price direction should therefore be verified before treating it as an active requirement.
What patients can do
- Ask for a written estimate of procedure, room, consultation and diagnostic charges.
- Request an itemised bill and clarification of any unfamiliar entries.
- Confirm whether the displayed procedure rate includes medicines, implants, taxes and follow-up care.
- Check the latest notices from the Karnataka health department and relevant regulators.
Why transparency matters
Clearer price information can help patients plan expenses and compare services. The practical benefit depends on whether rates are updated, consistently displayed and accompanied by clear explanations of what is included.
