News literacy guide — October 19, 2026
Fast-moving stories spread quickly online, but early reports may contain incomplete details. Before sharing a breaking headline, check when it was published, whether the article has been updated and whether more than one credible newsroom reports the same core facts.
Five checks for breaking news
Confirm the date and location; look for named sources or an official statement; distinguish allegations from confirmed facts; verify images and videos against the event being described; and update or correct a post if later information changes the story.
For public safety and crime reports
Avoid naming suspects unless identities are confirmed by credible sources and legally appropriate. Do not circulate graphic content, private information or material that could endanger people or interfere with an investigation.
Why updates matter
A responsible news report should clearly say what is known, what remains unconfirmed and what readers should expect next. This explainer is general guidance, not a claim about a separate breaking event.
