India’s passenger-vehicle market has seen a change in manufacturer rankings during the first half of 2026–27. Industry data reported this week indicates that Maruti Suzuki retained the leading position, while Tata Motors moved ahead of Mahindra in market-share terms for April to September.
The report put Maruti Suzuki’s share at about 40.96%, Tata Motors at 14.82%, Mahindra at 13.58% and Hyundai at 11.57%. Figures can differ depending on whether a report measures wholesale dispatches, retail registrations or another metric, so the underlying methodology matters.
Compact SUVs remain a key battleground, while hatchbacks, sedans, safety equipment, connected features and fuel choices also shape buying decisions. Festive-season demand can support sales as dealers offer exchange bonuses and finance schemes.
For buyers, market share is only one consideration. Compare the exact variant, safety equipment, service network, resale expectations and running costs. Source: Loksatta business report, October 17, 2026.
