With forecasts warning of rain, thunderstorms and gusty winds in parts of India, residents should prepare for rapidly changing conditions. Heavy rain can reduce visibility, cause waterlogging and disrupt transport, while lightning and strong winds pose risks even when a storm lasts only a short time.
During lightning and thunderstorms
Move into a substantial enclosed building or a hard-topped vehicle. Avoid open fields, hilltops, isolated trees, metal fences and water bodies. If you hear thunder, do not wait for rain to become heavy before seeking shelter. Follow local emergency instructions if conditions worsen.
On roads and during flooding
Reduce speed on wet roads and leave extra space between vehicles. Never drive or walk through floodwater when its depth or current is uncertain. Water can conceal open drains, damaged road surfaces and electrical hazards. If a road is blocked, turn around and use an official diversion rather than taking an unknown route.
At home
- Secure loose items on balconies and terraces.
- Keep phones charged and store emergency contacts.
- Stay clear of fallen wires and report them to the authorities.
- Keep children away from flooded streets and drains.
Follow official alerts
Check the IMD forecast and local disaster-management or civic advisories for the affected district and time period. Do not forward unverified claims about extreme weather. Forecasts change, and official warnings provide the most relevant instructions for your location.
