India’s major private-sector lenders reported sharply different profit growth rates for the July–September 2026 quarter, putting banking earnings in focus. HDFC Bank reported a 4.7% year-on-year increase in standalone net profit to ₹19,510 crore, while Axis Bank reported a 37.6% rise to ₹7,003 crore. The figures underline why investors should look beyond headline profit and examine margins, operating expenses, provisions and asset quality.

    HDFC Bank Q2 FY27: Profit rises 4.7%

HDFC Bank’s quarterly net profit rose to ₹19,510 crore for the quarter ended September 30, 2026. Net interest income increased 9.7% year on year to ₹34,619 crore, supported by loan growth of 16.3% and deposit growth of 18.8%. Its gross non-performing asset ratio eased to 1.11% from 1.17% in the previous quarter, suggesting a modest improvement in reported asset quality.

However, treasury trading gains were lower than a year earlier, and provisions for bad loans increased. The results were slightly below analyst expectations, showing how treasury income and credit costs can affect reported earnings even when core lending activity expands. Investors will also follow the bank’s leadership transition and management guidance for the coming quarters.

Axis Bank Q2 FY27: Stronger profit growth, cost pressures

Axis Bank recorded standalone net profit of ₹7,003 crore, up 37.6% from ₹5,090 crore in the year-ago quarter. The improvement reflected robust credit growth and lower provisions. Yet the lender also narrowly missed analysts’ estimates as higher operating expenses and weaker other income offset some of the gains. The comparison shows that a high growth rate alone does not necessarily mean every operating metric is improving.

    What should investors compare?

For a fair HDFC Bank vs Axis Bank Q2 results comparison, examine net interest income and margin trends, deposit mobilisation, loan growth, slippages, provision coverage, operating costs and management commentary. Consider valuation as well: a strong quarter may already be reflected in a share price, while risks can remain even after a profit increase.

Quarterly figures are backward-looking and do not guarantee future share-price performance. Investors should review each bank’s official financial statements and exchange filings before making decisions. This article is for information only, not investment advice.
