FASTag users in India are set to get a major convenience as they will soon be able to change the bank that issued their FASTag without replacing the physical sticker installed on their vehicle. Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari has launched OneTag, a new FASTag portability system aimed at making it easier for vehicle owners to switch between participating banks.
The initiative was launched during the Global Fintech Fest 2026 in Mumbai and is expected to simplify FASTag management for millions of motorists across the country.
How Will OneTag Work?
Under the existing system, vehicle owners who wanted to change their FASTag issuing bank generally had to close the existing tag and obtain a new FASTag from another bank. This also meant replacing the physical sticker attached to the vehicle’s windshield.
With the new OneTag FASTag portability system, users will be able to retain their existing physical FASTag while transferring the tag’s issuing bank relationship to another participating bank.
The portability process is designed to retain important details associated with the vehicle, including the existing FASTag and Tag ID, eliminating the need to purchase and install another sticker.
Rajmargyatra App to Help Users Switch Banks
The new facility is expected to be integrated through the Rajmargyatra app, allowing eligible FASTag users to initiate the portability process digitally.
Users will first need to check whether their FASTag is eligible for portability. After completing the required verification and consent process, they can select another participating bank. The selected bank will then complete its customer verification and onboarding procedures before taking over the FASTag account.
This could make switching banks considerably easier for vehicle owners who are dissatisfied with their existing FASTag provider or want to use another bank’s services.
More Banks Expected to Join OneTag
The OneTag framework has been developed with the involvement of the Indian Highways Management Company Limited (IHMCL) and the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI).
Several banks are expected to participate in the portability framework, giving FASTag users more choices over time. As more banks join the system, motorists could have greater flexibility when selecting their preferred FASTag service provider.
Another Step Towards Smarter Tolling
The launch of OneTag comes as India continues to modernise its highway tolling infrastructure. The government is also working towards barrier-free toll collection, using technologies such as FASTag and Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR).
For motorists, the key advantage of OneTag is simple: changing the FASTag issuing bank will no longer necessarily mean changing the sticker on the vehicle.
The OneTag FASTag portability system could significantly improve the user experience for India’s FASTag customers. By allowing motorists to switch participating banks while retaining their existing physical tag, the initiative removes an unnecessary step from the current process and provides greater flexibility to vehicle owners.
