Karnataka CM Siddaramaiah Introduces Film Industry Reforms with ₹200 Ticket Cap

Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has introduced groundbreaking reforms for the state's film industry, aiming to make cinema more accessible and foster growth within the sector. Announced during the 2025 state budget, these measures include capping movie ticket prices at ₹200 across all theatres, including multiplexes, a move welcomed by cinephiles and industry stakeholders alike.

The ticket price cap is designed to encourage more middle-class audiences to return to theatres, addressing concerns about high costs driving viewers to streaming platforms. This initiative is expected to boost footfall in cinemas, particularly for Kannada films, which often face challenges in competing with other language films in multiplexes.

In addition to the ticket cap, Siddaramaiah announced the creation of a dedicated OTT platform to promote Kannada films, providing filmmakers with a structured digital space to showcase their work. The government has also allocated ₹3 crore to establish a repository for preserving Kannada films in both digital and non-digital formats, ensuring the preservation of the state's cinematic heritage.

Another significant reform is granting the cinema sector industry status, making it eligible for benefits under Karnataka's Industrial Policy. This recognition is expected to attract investments, provide financial support, and create opportunities for daily wage workers in the industry.

Further plans include the development of a state-of-the-art multiplex complex in Bengaluru and an international-level Film City in Mysuru, with a budget of ₹500 crore. These initiatives aim to strengthen Karnataka's position as a hub for film production and enhance the infrastructure for the entertainment sector.

These reforms mark a new chapter for Karnataka's film industry, balancing affordability for audiences with opportunities for growth and innovation. The measures reflect the government's commitment to supporting the arts while making cinema a more inclusive experience for all.
