Bank customers across India are facing possible disruption in branch services today, September 11, 2026, as the United Forum of Bank Unions (UFBU) has called a nationwide one-day bank strike. The strike is separate from the regular RBI bank-holiday calendar, meaning September 11 is not a nationwide bank holiday.
Are banks closed today?
The answer depends on the bank and branch. Public-sector bank operations are expected to be the most affected because employees affiliated with the striking unions may participate in the protest.
Major banks including SBI, Bank of Baroda, Canara Bank, PNB, Union Bank, UCO Bank and Indian Bank could see disruptions in branch-level services.
However, SBI has said it has made arrangements to maintain normal functioning of branches and offices, while warning customers that operations could still be affected because of the proposed strike. Customers have been advised to complete important transactions in advance and use digital banking channels.
What about SBI?
SBI branches are not officially closed nationwide as a regular holiday today, but customers may experience disruption depending on staff participation in the strike. SBI has advised customers to use ATMs, ADWMs, Customer Service Points, internet banking, YONO, mobile banking and UPI for routine requirements.
What about Bank of Baroda and Canara Bank?
Bank of Baroda and Canara Bank customers may also experience disruption in counter and branch-based services due to the nationwide strike. Customers with urgent work such as cash deposits, withdrawals, cheque-related work, KYC updates or other branch-dependent services should check with their individual branch before visiting.
Canara Bank’s official 2026 holiday calendar separately lists September 12 as the second Saturday, when branches across India will be closed.
Will UPI, ATMs and online banking work?
Most digital banking services are expected to remain available, including:
- UPI payments
- Internet banking
- Mobile banking
- ATMs
- Card transactions
- Digital fund transfers
However, customers should expect possible delays in services that require physical branch processing.
Why are bank employees on strike?
The UFBU’s demands include implementation of a five-day banking week and changes to the Performance Linked Incentive (PLI) system, among other issues. The unions have also announced further strike action for September 28–30 and warned of an indefinite strike from October 26 if their concerns remain unresolved.
Customers should therefore avoid postponing urgent branch-related work and use digital banking wherever possible
