Yash’s much-awaited film Toxic: A Fairy Tale for Grown-Ups has delivered a disappointing theatrical run despite arriving with enormous expectations and a reported budget of around ₹500 crore. The film, directed by Geetu Mohandas, marked Yash’s first major theatrical release after KGF: Chapter 2 and was positioned as one of the biggest Indian films of 2026.
According to the latest available box-office tracking data, Toxic has collected approximately ₹248.25 crore net in India and around ₹337.20 crore worldwide by September 18. The figures are estimates and can differ between tracking platforms and producer figures.
Reported ₹500 Crore Budget
The reported production cost of Toxic has been placed at approximately ₹500 crore, although the makers have not officially confirmed the exact figure. The film’s scale, multilingual release and extensive production requirements contributed to its positioning as a major pan-India event film.
At the reported budget level, its current theatrical collections represent a significant gap. However, a film’s production budget cannot be directly compared with worldwide gross to calculate the actual loss because theatrical revenue is divided among producers, distributors and exhibitors, while additional income can come from satellite, digital, music and other rights.
Strong Opening Followed by Sharp Decline
Toxic opened strongly, recording approximately ₹101.10 crore net in India on its first day, according to Sacnilk data cited in reports. However, collections dropped considerably after the opening, with negative word of mouth and mixed audience reactions affecting its theatrical momentum.
By the second week, the film’s daily earnings had fallen sharply. Reports noted that its second-week India net collection was below ₹10 crore, highlighting the difficulty the film faced in maintaining its initial momentum.
Is Toxic a Flop?
Several trade publications have described Toxic as a flop or major financial failure, based on its reported budget and theatrical performance. Koimoi, for example, classified the film as a flop after reporting an India net collection of ₹245.4 crore on Day 23 against an estimated ₹500 crore budget.
However, the exact financial loss cannot yet be established solely from box-office figures because revenue from non-theatrical rights and the final accounting between stakeholders are not fully public.
Yash’s Post-KGF Challenge
The performance of Toxic is particularly notable because it followed Yash’s enormous success with the KGF franchise. The actor’s return to theatres therefore generated substantial expectations among fans and the industry.
The film’s reported theatrical underperformance also appears to have affected its OTT prospects. Open Magazine reported that a previously discussed ₹150–200 crore digital-rights valuation had fallen substantially following the theatrical performance, although those negotiations have not been officially confirmed by the makers.
With its theatrical run nearing its end, Toxic now stands as a notable example of the financial risks associated with extremely high-budget Indian films, particularly when strong opening-day interest is not sustained through subsequent weeks.
