Bollywood veteran Amitabh Bachchan is reportedly planning to construct a memorial dharamshala in Ayodhya in memory of his late father, renowned Hindi poet Dr Harivansh Rai Bachchan. The proposed facility will have more than 20 rooms and is intended to provide accommodation for devotees visiting the temple city.
According to reports, an application seeking approval for the building layout has already been submitted to the Ayodhya Development Authority (ADA). The proposal is currently part of the approval process, with the public being given an opportunity to raise objections before the layout can receive final clearance.
Dharamshala to Come Up on ₹15 Crore Property
The proposed memorial will be built on land acquired by Bachchan along Dashrath Path as part of The Sarayu project. Reports put the value of the property at approximately ₹15 crore.
The proposed facility is expected to have more than 20 rooms, with the primary purpose of offering accommodation to pilgrims and visitors to Ayodhya. According to local reports, construction could begin after the necessary approvals are completed.
The ADA has reportedly issued a public notice inviting objections to the submitted building plan. The process allows authorities to consider any objections before moving ahead with approval.
Memorial for Harivansh Rai Bachchan
The project is being planned as a tribute to Amitabh Bachchan’s father, Harivansh Rai Bachchan, one of the most recognised Hindi poets and literary figures of the 20th century.
Harivansh Rai Bachchan is particularly remembered for his celebrated work Madhushala, published in 1935. He was also known for translating works of William Shakespeare into Hindi and received the Padma Bhushan for his contribution to literature.
The proposed dharamshala would therefore combine a practical purpose—providing accommodation for visitors—with a memorial element dedicated to the poet’s legacy.
Amitabh Bachchan’s Ayodhya Connection
Bachchan has previously invested in property in Ayodhya. His first reported purchase in The Sarayu project dates to the period around the 2024 Ram Mandir inauguration. Real-estate entrepreneur Abhinandan Lodha has previously spoken about Bachchan’s interest in acquiring land in the city.
The latest proposal adds a different dimension to his connection with Ayodhya, with the property potentially being used for a public-facing facility rather than solely as a private investment.
For now, the memorial dharamshala remains subject to the required approvals. If cleared, the more-than-20-room facility will serve visitors to Ayodhya while also commemorating the literary legacy of Harivansh Rai Bachchan
