The Reserve Bank of India has set the premature redemption price for Sovereign Gold Bond (SGB) 2019–20 Series V at ₹14,725 per gram, drawing attention to the long-term returns delivered by this tranche. The bonds were issued in October 2019 and became eligible for premature redemption on the interest-payment date after five years, subject to the scheme’s rules. The announced price reflects the average closing price of 999-purity gold over the three preceding business days, as published by the India Bullion and Jewellers Association.

How much did the bond’s value rise?

The original issue price was reported at ₹3,788 per gram for regular applicants, while eligible online applicants received a discount and paid ₹3,738 per gram. Compared with the online issue price, the redemption price of ₹14,725 represents an absolute capital-price increase of about 294%. A ₹1 lakh investment at ₹3,738 per gram would therefore be worth roughly ₹3.94 lakh at the announced redemption price, excluding interest and subject to the number of units originally purchased.

Return calculations should state the original issue price clearly. Investors who paid ₹3,788 per gram will calculate a slightly different absolute return than online applicants who received the discount. The headline percentage is also not the same as an annualised return: the holding period spans several years, so comparisons with deposits or market investments should use equivalent time periods and account for risk.

    How Sovereign Gold Bonds work

Sovereign Gold Bonds are government securities denominated in grams of gold and issued by the RBI on behalf of the Government of India. Instead of storing physical gold, the investor holds a security whose redemption value is linked to the market price of gold under the scheme’s formula. The bonds also carry a fixed interest component under the issue terms. The capital value can rise or fall with gold prices, and the redemption value is not a promise of future performance.

    What existing investors should check

Investors should confirm the tranche and redemption eligibility, check the redemption price and bank-account details through their issuing bank, post office, agent or depository channel, and retain relevant statements for tax records. The window for submitting the premature redemption request for this particular tranche was reported to have closed earlier in October, so holders should verify the applicable process with their service provider rather than assume a request can still be submitted.

Tax treatment depends on the holding route, redemption method and rules applicable to the investor. Review current tax guidance before selling or redeeming. This article is for general information, not personalised tax or investment advice.
