Nana Patekar was known for his powerful performances and outspoken personality, but behind his intense public image was a strong commitment to helping people in distress. One of the most remarkable stories about the late actor is the time he reportedly chose farmer families over a luxury car worth ₹1.5 crore.
The story was recently recalled by screenwriter Ranbir Pushp, who worked with Nana Patekar on Agni Sakshi. Speaking about the actor’s personality, Pushp said that Nana was often misunderstood because of his fiery temperament. He also shared an incident that showed a much more compassionate side of the actor. Hindustan Times
Nana Patekar Changed His Mind After Watching Farmers’ Families
According to Pushp, Nana Patekar had planned to purchase a luxury car costing around ₹1.5 crore. However, while watching television one evening, he saw reports about families struggling after farmers died by suicide.
The images of grieving wives, children and parents reportedly affected him deeply. Instead of going ahead with the car purchase, Nana decided that the money could make a greater difference in the lives of those families.
He contacted his artist friend Makarand Anaspure and asked him to arrange ₹15,000 cheques for affected farmer families. The reported ₹1.5 crore was therefore redirected towards helping families dealing with the aftermath of farmer suicides. NDTV
The incident later became part of Nana’s wider social work for farmers in Maharashtra.
The Beginning of NAAM Foundation
Nana Patekar and Makarand Anaspure went on to establish the NAAM Foundation in 2015, focusing on farmers and rural communities affected by drought, debt and financial hardship. The organisation expanded its work beyond immediate financial assistance, supporting education, livelihoods and village development. Business Today
The foundation’s work included helping widows and families of farmers, while also providing resources intended to create alternative sources of income.
A Different Side of Nana Patekar
The ₹1.5 crore car story offers a glimpse into why Nana Patekar’s public image cannot be defined only by his famous temper. Ranbir Pushp argued that the actor’s anger was often connected to situations he believed were wrong, while his actions towards vulnerable communities reflected his generous side. The Indian Express
For many fans, Nana’s decision to sacrifice a personal luxury for struggling families has become one of the most memorable examples of his humanitarian work. His contribution to farmers and rural communities ultimately became an important part of his legacy beyond cinema.
