Sardar 2, starring Karthi in a dual role, is a Tamil spy-action thriller directed by P. S. Mithran. The sequel to the 2022 film Sardar released in theatres on September 10, 2026. The film also features S. J. Suryah, Malavika Mohanan, Ashika Ranganath, Rajisha Vijayan and Yogi Babu in important roles. With a runtime of nearly three hours, the movie attempts to deliver a much bigger espionage story than its predecessor.
Sardar 2 Story
The story once again revolves around RAW agents and a dangerous international mission. Karthi plays both Sardar and his son Viji, with the father-son relationship forming an important part of the narrative. The central conflict involves a dangerous bio-weapon and an antagonist known as Black Dagger, played by S. J. Suryah. The mission takes the characters across different locations while combining espionage, action and a social message.
The first half establishes the mission effectively and keeps the information flowing. Some of the action sequences, including large-scale set pieces, provide the theatrical excitement expected from a spy thriller. However, the screenplay becomes increasingly predictable as the film progresses.
Karthi’s Performance
Karthi is easily the biggest strength of Sardar 2. His portrayal of Sardar and Viji has enough differences in body language, voice modulation and mannerisms to distinguish the two characters. His performance particularly helps the emotional portions of the film.
S. J. Suryah brings energy to the antagonist role, although several reviews felt that the character could have been written with greater depth. Malavika Mohanan gets a meaningful action-oriented role, while Ashika Ranganath also contributes effectively.
Technical Aspects
The film scores with its scale and action sequences, while the cinematography helps create a larger international-spy-thriller atmosphere. However, the editing is a major weakness. At almost three hours, Sardar 2 feels unnecessarily long, particularly during the second half and climax. Multiple reviews have pointed to the film’s stretched screenplay and lack of sustained suspense.
Sam C. S.’s background score supports some of the action moments, but it does not consistently provide the impact expected from the film’s larger set pieces.
Sardar 2 Movie Review: Verdict
Sardar 2 has an interesting premise, committed performances from Karthi and several well-mounted action sequences. Unfortunately, predictable writing, an overlong second half and a stretched climax prevent the sequel from matching the impact of the original.
