Aadhaar cardholders planning to correct or change their name should take note of a new verification procedure introduced by the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI). The authority has issued a new Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) for updating names in Aadhaar, making the verification process more stringent and focused on the authenticity of supporting documents. 

The new procedure is particularly important for people whose name needs to be changed because of marriage, legal name changes or other significant personal circumstances. UIDAI has directed officials to carefully examine the documents submitted with name-update requests before approving changes.

What Has Changed in Aadhaar Name Correction?

Under the revised process, Aadhaar officials will cross-check the authenticity of documents, affidavits and Gazette notifications submitted by applicants. This additional scrutiny is intended to prevent fraudulent or unsupported name changes.

UIDAI’s latest circular listing confirms that the authority issued an SOP specifically for Aadhaar name updates on September 18, 2026. 

This means applicants should ensure that the information provided in their supporting documents is accurate and consistent before submitting a request.

    Documents May Be Carefully Verified

Name correction requests can require documentary evidence depending on the nature of the change. UIDAI already recognises that demographic details may need updating following events such as marriage or errors made during the original Aadhaar enrolment.

Under the new verification approach, officials may examine whether the submitted documents genuinely support the requested name change. Where a Gazette notification or affidavit is involved, its authenticity can also be checked.

Applicants should therefore avoid submitting unclear, incomplete or inconsistent documents, as such requests could face additional verification or rejection.

Can Aadhaar Name Be Changed Online?

A common misconception is that every Aadhaar demographic correction can be completed online. However, name changes have traditionally required stronger verification, and UIDAI’s current information continues to distinguish between online services and updates that require an Aadhaar enrolment/update centre visit.

Before visiting a centre, applicants should check the latest document requirements and acceptable proof applicable to their particular case.

    Why UIDAI Introduced Stricter Verification

Aadhaar is widely used for identity verification across government and financial services. Incorrect or fraudulent demographic information can therefore create problems beyond the Aadhaar card itself.

The enhanced verification process is intended to improve data accuracy and reduce misuse while ensuring that genuine applicants can update their information with valid supporting evidence.

For Aadhaar users, the key takeaway is simple: do not rely on unofficial claims about name correction requirements. Check the latest UIDAI rules, carry appropriate original documents and make sure the requested change is properly supported.

The new SOP represents another step toward making Aadhaar demographic updates more controlled, document-based and secure.
