The Central Government has extended the targeted LPG subsidy for beneficiaries of the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY) for the financial year 2026-27. Under the latest decision, eligible Ujjwala beneficiaries will continue to receive a ₹300 subsidy on every 14.2 kg domestic LPG cylinder, subject to the applicable annual refill limit. The subsidy will also be provided proportionately to beneficiaries using 5-kg cylinders.
The government has approved an expenditure of approximately ₹12,001 crore for continuing the targeted subsidy during FY 2026-27. The measure is intended to make LPG more affordable for households covered under the Ujjwala scheme and encourage continued use of clean cooking fuel.
Who Will Get the ₹300 LPG Subsidy?
The benefit is specifically aimed at eligible PM Ujjwala Yojana consumers. The ₹300 subsidy applies to a standard 14.2-kg domestic LPG cylinder, while those using a 5-kg cylinder will receive a proportionately calculated subsidy.
The subsidy is not a universal benefit for every domestic LPG consumer. Eligibility depends on the consumer being covered under the PMUY targeted-subsidy framework and complying with the applicable requirements.
A recent change is also important for LPG consumers. From October 1, 2026, Aadhaar biometric authentication has become relevant for accessing subsidised LPG refills at the regulated retail price. Consumers can complete authentication during delivery, at an LPG distributor’s showroom or through the mobile applications of the public-sector oil marketing companies.
Why Is the Government Continuing the Subsidy?
The government has previously stated that the targeted subsidy is intended to protect PMUY households from fluctuations in international LPG prices and keep cooking gas affordable.
The PMUY was launched in May 2016 to provide deposit-free LPG connections to adult women from eligible poor households. According to the government’s earlier data, the scheme had around 10.33 crore connections as of July 2025, with LPG consumption among PMUY households also increasing over time.
The ₹300 targeted subsidy was originally increased from ₹200 to ₹300 per 14.2-kg cylinder in October 2023. The government subsequently continued the benefit for FY 2025-26 and has now extended it into FY 2026-27.
What Ujjwala Beneficiaries Should Check
Eligible consumers should ensure that their LPG consumer details, Aadhaar authentication and bank account information are updated correctly. Since subsidy benefits are routed through the applicable DBT mechanism, accurate records can help avoid problems with receiving the benefit.
Overall, the latest extension means eligible PMUY beneficiaries can continue to receive targeted financial support on LPG refills during FY 2026-27, subject to the government’s eligibility and operational rules.
