Amazon is reaching out to former employees, including some who were recently laid off, for job opportunities in artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning (ML) and cloud computing. The move comes as the technology giant continues to reduce parts of its workforce while simultaneously hiring for specialised technology roles.

According to recruiter emails reported by Business Insider, Amazon’s AI agent organisation, overseen by AWS Vice President Swami Sivasubramanian, contacted former employees with AI and machine learning experience about available positions. One recruiter referred to the effort as the “Swami’s Boomerang Reengagement Initiative.”

    Amazon’s ‘Boomerang’ Hiring Strategy

The outreach is part of what Amazon describes as its longstanding practice of reconnecting with former employees. The company said eligible former workers, including employees who were previously laid off, can be considered for current openings based on business requirements.

In one reported case, an AWS Finance recruiter offered a former employee an expedited interview process that could potentially lead to an offer. Another recruiter asked a former employee whether Amazon’s return-to-office policy had influenced their decision to leave.

Amazon spokesperson Haley Silva said the company is “always interested” in connecting with talented current and former employees and described rehires as a normal, longstanding part of its recruitment process. The company also said its workplace attendance requirements have not changed.

    AI Skills Remain in Demand

The development highlights the continuing competition for workers with specialised AI and machine learning skills. While Amazon has been cutting jobs in several areas, it continues to recruit for positions considered strategically important to its technology businesses.

Reports indicate that Amazon has eliminated more than 30,000 positions through multiple rounds of workforce reductions over the past year. At the same time, the company has maintained hiring in areas such as AI and cloud computing.

For former employees, the outreach could provide an opportunity to return to a company where they already understand its systems, products and working environment. For Amazon, reconnecting with experienced employees may reduce the time required to identify and onboard specialised talent.

The move also illustrates a broader shift in the technology industry, where companies are simultaneously restructuring traditional roles and competing aggressively for people with advanced AI capabilities.

Amazon has previously indicated that some laid-off employees could be eligible for rehire, meaning the latest outreach is not necessarily a completely new policy. The company’s current approach appears to be focused on filling specific open positions rather than reversing its broader workforce restructuring.
